BEACH CLEANING IN ESSAOUIRA Initiated by some individuals, a Sunday morning of December 2018 - after the high tides and days of strong swell brought back a monstrous quantity of waste - the cleaning of the beach of Essaouira, which was to be a punctual action, has become a Sunday appointment.
Soon, the small group was joined by associations, restaurateurs, operators of guest houses, water sports clubs ... The initiative "Beach Cleaning Essaouira" has become an approach, a collective commitment, that many Souiris now share every Sunday. Organizers of quad and camel treks, nautical bases also participate by providing their teams and means of transport that facilitate mobility on the beach and are responsible for the collection of bags too heavy to be reported on foot.
Ozone, the solid waste management company in Essaouira, is also present alongside the team of volunteers with a vehicle to remove the garbage bags and all the litter picked up. The ambition goes further than a waste collection: recycling and sorting are already envisaged ... Indeed, steps have been taken with a new local recycling cooperative "TCR Coop" recently installed, in order to transfer plastic, aluminum and glass. These will be sorted, packaged and sent to Casablanca for recycling.
The Essaouira project, a model city in the field of environmental preservation, is also taking shape on the port side. Some of the volunteers, involved in the Fishing Boat Race, made contact with the Association for Communication, Development and Conservation of the Environment and the Fishery Resource, which brings together most fishermen who own a small boat. Thus, a project-group is being set up with all the associations of fishermen of the port and with the support of the Maritime Vocational Qualification Center, the municipality, the port authorities, in order to initiate a concerted reflection on a better taking into account the problem of waste management on boats and in the port.
